The song played with Lois Armstrong and the
year was 1968, July to be precise. We all had
finished Flight Attendant training with
Air Bahama at Aer Lingus in Dublin and were
heading for Luxemburg. I remember crying as I
heard the song, missing the good times in Ireland
and Crofton Airport Hotel. I was 21, with only a
future and not old enough to have a past!

For most of us it was the adventure of a lifetime
and any doubts that a new airline would really
work, never entered our minds,(except my Father's,
as he worried about any and all of the information
I gave him. It was to good to be true and the
Bahamas was far away. He was mistaken and
Air Bahama took off ).

44 years later, with more past than future, medicare
and ailments, furloughed from World Airways, more
airline training behind me than any sane person
really needs, shutting down PanAm etc., I find myself
once again in the classroom, 3rd day of training to
become a Flight Attendant. ( I am actually hired to
be an Instructor and Supervisor !!) I am 65 years old
and only in America can you do this!

I look forward to jump in the slide like a tooth
extraction with no Novacain, and realize it may be the
end of me and my back. I will be out of breath and in
pain from the arthritic right hip as I climb the
stairs to the ramp and dizzy facing the height of
the slide.

The wet ditching is not going to be pretty, when I say
there are more uniform sizes 2-4 in the class (and I
somehow slept through that size as a teenager)! Thanks
goodness we have to be fully dressed in the rather chilly
pool. It will cover, not warm!

Not for the love of people and the excitement of travel,
I have traveled loops around the world and served as
many passengers as I ever wish to give a tray or
Champagne, but ( and here it is , the reason why :
( I will always miss the SENSE OF BELONGING,
walking through TSA security, to the side for crew,
get a collegial "hello" from the crew when I
commercial, you name it and I have missed it since
I was furloughed from World.

So I enter the classroom and find the "new" Flight
Attendants wanting to ask questions, get explanations,
study and talk, and gone are my pains, fear of the
slide and worry about my not so athletic body in the
pool, I once again can belong, amidst the FARs, Rules
and Service Procedures, Basic Indoctrination, TSA
security and the wonderful walk down a jetway to my
plane and crew.

I have come home, again, and I swear I can hear
"what a wonderful world" play... and it truly is,
entering the classroom adding another wing to my
collection.
