Feb. 10, 1926 to Nov. 8, 2015
Vera Gudrun von Etzel Hilderman died on
Bainbridge Island, Washington on Nov. 8, 2015.
She was born in Frankfurt, Germany on Feb. 10,
1926. Please refer to Cook Family Funeral
Home's website
for information on the
memorial service
Vera passed away in her home on Bainbridge
Island on November 8, 2015. Vera was an expert
equestrienne and a linguist fluent (and witty)
in English and German and conversant in French,
Spanish and Italian. Incredibly well traveled,
she grew up in Wiesbaden, Germany, but traveled
through Africa, nearly all of Europe, most of
the United States, Puerto Rico and the Caribbean.
As the wife of Henry A. Hilderman (1924-2002),
Lt. Col., USAF, she lived in various states in
the U.S., Puerto Rico, and Luxembourg.

Vera was very learned and interested in English
literature. She met Henry and they had a wonderful
life together and travelled many places.

Air Bahama Navigator Henry was a 23-year veteran
of the United States Air Force and participated
in the Berlin Airlift from beginning to its
conclusion. Henry served in the US Strategic Air
Command as a crew member and in combat intelligence.
He additionaly flew as navigator for Air Bahama
and was appointed Chief Navigator. In the early
Air Bahama of 1968-1970 Vera was close friends
to among others Jake and Eva Jacobs and Gunn Vidal.
At The Air Bahama Luxembourg crew reunion of 2000
at the Hotel Italia, Vera and Henry attended and
it was a great occasion to renew our friendship.
Sadly Henry also is gone. We lost a good friend
in fun loving and gifted Vera who leaves us sad
and at a loss of her and being so fortunate to
have known her. R I P

Her daughter, Mara Hilderman, son Brian Hilderman
and grandchildren, James and Robin Hilderman,
survive Vera.

Vera was conservative in her politics but
compassionate in her philanthropy and a good friend
to all who knew her. She was extremely funny, and
her family and friends will miss her witty repartee.

The family requests no flowers, but these were Vera’s
favorite philanthropies: Paralyzed Veterans of America
(www.pva.org); The Humane Society (www.humanesociety.org);
and Old Dog Haven in Western Washington
(www.olddoghaven.org).

Memorial Services will be at Saint Barnabas Episcopal
Church, Saturday, December 12 at 11am.
Arrangements entrusted to Cook Family Funeral Home.
